Our thoughts: Old Geno's (Portland ME)

w/Aepril Schaille, Amber Spyglass & Lilac Ambush

Our big “Dark Event” was originally slotted for January, but a blizzard swept through New England and forced a re-sceduling. The wait made it all the sweeter: a four-act, all-goth show at Geno’s. Aepril Schaille, making her debut as a chilling, piano-pounding songstress, opened up backed with drums and cello. Her lyrics spun dark tales and referenced bodies of water a fair shake. Amber Spyglass came up from Massachussetts and put in a sturdy set of decidedly retro female-fronted goth/new wave in a Cure/Smiths vein. Lilac Ambush, also from MA, were more on the techno/New Order side. but alternated between live and synthetic drums. One the whole quite captivating, but maybe should go either all-human or all-synthetic (at least to these ears.) Our set was made all the better by the appropriately chosen openers and the properly set mood. All this and to think it’s only our fifth show!
